tips
- serve to the body: aiming at your opponent’s belly button makes it difficult for them to return effectively, often leading to a weak response you can attack. https://youtu.be/ByNtBs8-lJM?t=6
serve return
- Return deep down the middle: This neutralizes an opponent who follows their serve into the court, forcing them to hit a difficult, deep half-volley https://youtu.be/ByNtBs8-lJM?t=37
Doubles strategies
based on:
Starting position

Target
hit to the opponent standing where you are standing.
as a baseliner
hit cross-court to the opponent’s baseliner to prolong the point. exception: If the opposing net player continuously poaches/intercepts your crosscourt groundstrokes, occasionally hit a shot down the line (aiming inside the singles line for margin
as a net player
aim for the opposing net player (preferably low at their feet) to finish the point.
exception: If you have a low volley, avoid the net player and hit back to the baseliner to avoid getting slammed
Net movement
- move toward the ball as it moves across the court
- when the ball moves away, the net player on that side shifts forward (offense), while the opposite net player drops back slightly (defense)
Positioning after hitting a successful lob
When you lob over your opponents and they have to switch:
you and your partner should move to the service line
Defense when getting lobbed
- when you lobed over your head: move back diagonally into “no-man’s land” to gain information.
- if your P hit a weak lob: move all the way back to the baseline;
- if your P a good ball: you can move forward to maintain an offensive position.
